A potted plant, snaps of your last jolly or a fragrant, over-ripe banana? Every workspace is unique and the WonderGirls’ desks are as unique as they come! Your desk can say a lot about your personality, so we were interested to see what our little work homes looked like and what hidden gems we could find there.
Along with the usual files, piles of work and numerous pens, pencils and long stretches of dust, we found an array of interesting items on each WonderGirls’ desk. With an office full of females there were a fair number of desk ornaments (fondly knows as ‘dornaments’), but which quirky little object belongs to which WonderGirl?
Take a peek at each of our desk shots here and see if you matched the correct ‘dornament’ with its rightful owner.
Julie – A treasure trove of goodies reside on and around Mrs Hayes’ desk, from a 3 year old bottle of cough syrup to a random magic 8 ball – a root around her desk is like delving into a girly Aladdin’s cave. There is usually a cough sweet or two lurking somewhere, ready for a pre-conference call cough remedy, rude sticky notes (who’d have thunk it of Jules) and an adorable mouse mat with a photo on of her beloved rescue dog, Dave! To get to the real goodies though, a root around her desk drawers is in order, especially if you have the munchies. Although beware, half of the delights in there have actually been forgotten about and could be way (wayyy) out of date!
Inge – The jet setter Marketing Director that Inge is, her desk is hit once every 3 weeks (usually) at 150mph. There is always a pile or two of ever-important work files for her to sift through, another pile of ever increasing junk mail and little welcome notes, prettily drawn onto sticky notes ready to welcome her back to the UK. Ever present on Inge’s desk is a cup of Decaf Earl Grey, the office always smells a little bit more posh when she’s in the country! Another must-have on Inge’s desk (that is always present), is a delicious smelling tube of hand cream – we always know where to go if our mitts are feeling a bit chapped, thanks Inge!
Lynsey – Hmmm, my desk… slightly over clinical at times and messy (annoyingly for me) at others when I’m mega-busy – arghhhhh, I can’t think straight with a messy desk – I have ever-so-slightly OCD tendencies. If you were to rummage around my desk at the moment you will find numerous piccies of my beloved Rough Collie Bella, holiday snaps of me and my hubby in Provence and healthy snacks like apples and almonds. Not particularly my snack of choice but, hey ho, needs must, the summer is on its way after all and the dreaded bikini beckons!!
Laura’s desk is always bright and sunny!! We flock to Laura’s desk when we’re feeling a little ‘SAD’ in the darker winter months, to bask in front of her latest holiday screensaver – Jamaica is her current ‘happy place’. Along with her amazing desktop image, Laura has a number of colourful friends including her cherished must-have Minion, a hand-painted Toucan from Mexico and the cutest nodding turtle from Canary Islands – she’s such a jet setter!!
If ever there is a girl to wear flowers in her hair, it’s our Emmy. So when she has to leave her ‘Flower Crown’ at home, she displays flowery prettiness on her computer desktop instead. Also residing on Emmy’s desk is her prickly but cute Cactus companion (bought for her by her boyfriend), who regularly makes his presence known when one of us accidentally catches ourselves on his spines whilst going over creative on screen, ouch! Also Emmy is never without fruit, although on this occasion, there are no drawn-on faces to be seen – where’s that marker pen…
Vicky has yet to build up a Wonderland-level conglomeration of ‘stuff’ as she’s the newest WonderGirl of us all, so she’s still a way off from having ‘power-hoarder’ status! What she does have though is a small army of weird and wonderful creatures, from the pink, scary pen wobbler in her pen pot to a couple strange fuzzy creatures made by her own fair hand! I personally think they’ve been hired (under the radar) to keep an eye on us all – look at those wide staring eyes!!
So, after that analysis, it seems most of us are pretty weird (and indeed wonderful) in what we decide to share our desks with. Inge’s may be the exception to this rule, where practicality seems to reign more than others. She does often share her desk (while she hot-desks from sunny Barcelona) with the bookkeeper, IT, the occasional client and a cheeky WonderMonkey, so maybe it’s not a bad idea it’s not quite as crazy as some of the others!
Overall we think a little bit of weird, wonderful and just a touch messy isn’t a bad thing, being in the creative world! Surrounding ourselves with lots of inspiring content is a must – that’s our excuse anyway, and we’re sticking to it!
We would love to see what’s on your desk, why not share a pic or two with us on Twitter @TheWonderMonkey or on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/inthewonderlandltd – we’d love to see your weird and wacky, or just super clean and tidy work homes!
